Learn More About Our Driving Academy’s Online DIP

*The 8-Hour Online Driver Improvement Program is licensed by the Virginia DMV and is now available to participants of all ages. Those taking the online course can also complete the final examination from home, making the entire program 100% online.

*Individuals with a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) must still take the class in person only.

*Please be aware that completion of the online program is not processed instantly. We are required to notify the DMV electronically that you have successfully completed the course, as the DMV is not set up for automatic notifications. This process typically takes at least 2 business days.

*Once your completion has been fully processed, you will receive a certificate of completion via email, and we will notify the DMV of your course completion. Please note that we do not notify courts or insurance companies under any circumstances. This is your responsibility.

How To Register for Course

⚠️ Important — Please Read These 6 Points Carefully

1. Choose the Classroom Course if Online Is Not a Good Fit
  • If you’re not comfortable using a computer, prefer learning with a live instructor, or you have a CDL, we strongly recommend taking the 8-hour classroom DIP instead.

  • Classes are offered multiple times a week at many convenient Northern Virginia locations.

  • View schedule & register:

2. Online Course Requires Two Registrations
  • First, you must register with AA Driving Academy.

  • After completing that step, you will receive a link to register again with our affiliate vendor.

  • This extra step ensures your information is correct so we can issue the right certificate and accurately report your completion to the Virginia DMV.

  • You only pay once.

3. Your Reason Code Must Be Accurate

If you enter the wrong reason code, it cannot be corrected later. The Virginia DMV does not allow anyone to change it.
An incorrect code may require you to take the course again.

Select the correct code based on your situation:

  • You received an official DMV letter → DMV

  • You want 5 safe-driving points / your lawyer recommended it / taking it before a court date → VOL (Voluntary)

  • A judge or prosecutor legally ordered you to take the course → COU (Court Ordered)

  • Choosing INS (Insurance) will not give you 5 good points.

4. Certificates Are Not Issued Automatically
  • After completing the course and passing the final test, your certificate is not sent instantly.

  • Please allow one (1) business day (Mon–Fri) to receive your certificate by email.

  • If you finish on Friday evening or Saturday, your certificate will arrive on Monday.

  • Do not wait until the last minute — complete the course early.

5. DMV Reporting Is Not Instant
  • Your completion is not automatically reported to the DMV.

  • Please allow up to two (2) business days (Mon–Fri) for DMV submission after you pass the course.

  • DMV deadlines are strict:
Example — If the deadline is 05/10, finishing the course at 11:50 pm on 05/09 will not meet the deadline. You must complete it 2 business days earlier.

  • DMV receives your completion only after we manually process it.

6. AA Driving Academy Does Not Notify Courts or Insurance
  • We only report your completion to the Virginia DMV.

  • Notifying your lawyer, court, or insurance company is your responsibility.

  • You will receive your certificate by email — you may print or forward it wherever needed.

How Your Certificate Can Help

  • Earn 5 good points on your driving record

  • Prevent license suspension or reinstate your license with DMV

  • Get traffic tickets dismissed or reduced

  • Lower your auto insurance premiums

  • Gain practical defensive driving skills

  • Receive traffic court tips, preparation, and guidance
